Colorado requires individuals interested in starting a family child care home business to complete pre-licensing course as part of the licensing process. This 15-hour Family Child Care Pre-Licensing course is a crucial step in becoming a licensed provider.

Course Content

The pre-licensing course covers essential topics for child care providers, including:

  • Child care rules and regulations

  • Child growth and development

  • Developmentally appropriate practices

  • Administration and business practices

  • Health, nutrition, and safety

  • Family and community partnerships

  • Cultural diversity, equity, and inclusion

  • Professionalism

Additional Required Training

In addition to the pre-licensing course, prospective providers must complete:

  • First Aid and CPR for infants, children, and adult

  • Standard Precautions (minimizing the spread of germs, preventing disease)

  • Medication Administration

Registration and Completion

To complete the licensing requirements, providers must:

  • Register in the Colorado Shines Professional Development Information System (PDIS)

  • Take some online courses through the PDIS platform

  • Complete the 15-hour Family Child Care Pre-Licensing course approved by the Colorado Office of Early Childhood

The Colorado Department of Early Childhood offers a free 1-hour orientation for those interested in starting a Family Child Care Home business. This orientation provides information about licensing requirements and detailed instructions on submitting an original family child care home application.
